Two suspected drug traffickers were arrested and a significant amount of illicit substances seized in Migori County. The operation, aimed at dismantling a local drug and alcohol syndicate, was led by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) in collaboration with the Anti-Narcotic Unit (ANU) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
The officers targeted various locations within the county, recovering 384 tariffs and 628 sticks suspected to be marijuana. In addition, a substantial quantity of chang’aa, a local illicit alcohol, was seized, including 21.5 liters of the substance. Officers also uncovered dry green plant material suspected to be cannabis, packed in two sacks and a basin.
Further investigation at the premises yielded additional items, including 40 tariffs and 230 sticks of what is believed to be cannabis, along with 1.5 liters of chang’aa, uncustomed cigarette packets, dry plant material, and an improvised smoking device. Two phones were also recovered during the raid.
NACADA CEO Anthony Omerikwa praised the success of the operation, highlighting the strength of the collaborative efforts between the involved agencies. “This successful operation underscores the power of our multi-agency approach in combating the proliferation of illicit drugs and alcohol. We are committed to safeguarding communities from the harmful effects of substance abuse,” Omerikwa stated.
The CEO reaffirmed NACADA’s firm stance on drug and alcohol abuse, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy. “We cannot allow our neighborhoods to be overtaken by the destructive consequences of drug abuse. These substances ruin lives, families, and society,” he added.
The seized items will undergo forensic analysis to confirm their nature, while the two suspects are expected to be arraigned in court. Omerikwa also urged the public to remain vigilant, encouraging citizens to report suspicious activities to the authorities to help create a safer and healthier environment for all.
This operation is a testament to NACADA’s ongoing efforts to combat substance abuse and uphold the rule of law.
