Bluesky, the social media platform launched by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, announced on Monday that it will be adding blue checkmarks to verified accounts, signaling a major step toward increasing trust and authenticity on the platform. In a blog post, Bluesky stated that it would “proactively verify authentic and notable accounts” and display a blue check next to their names. The company emphasized that trust is fundamental to meaningful social interaction, noting that the new initiative would help users easily identify legitimate accounts and avoid engaging with potential imposters.
This move mirrors Twitter’s previous efforts to combat impersonation by verifying account holders, a feature that was significantly altered under Elon Musk’s ownership of the platform. After Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in 2022, the blue check system shifted from a verification method to a paid subscription for Twitter’s Premium tier, sparking debates over the authenticity of verified accounts.
Bluesky’s decision to implement blue checkmarks comes at a time when social media users are increasingly concerned about distinguishing between real and fake accounts.
