Kenya has launched an ambitious Ksh 152 billion Artificial Intelligence (AI) development plan aimed at accelerating the adoption of AI technology across key economic sectors. Speaking during the launch, Information, Communication, and Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo emphasized the government’s commitment to positioning Kenya as a leader in the global digital space.
“The launch is a commitment to shaping Kenya’s digital future, ensuring that we are not spectators but architects of our digital destiny,” Kabogo stated.
The AI development plan aligns with Kenya’s National Digital Master Plan (2022-2032), which identifies AI as a critical tool for driving innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth. The government has been formulating its National AI Strategy for over two years, with a vision built on three core pillars: AI Digital Infrastructure, Data and AI Governance, and AI Research, Innovation, and Commercialization.
Recognizing the importance of skilled human capital, Kabogo announced that the government will collaborate with tertiary institutions to develop AI talent. Plans are underway to establish legislation that will integrate tech graduates into ministries as AI officers, fostering a pipeline of AI professionals who can contribute to national development.
Kenya’s AI Strategy also aims to ensure a balance between technological advancements and regulatory safeguards. With AI rapidly transforming industries, concerns regarding job displacement, data privacy, misinformation, and ethical AI use remain central to policy discussions. Kabogo reassured stakeholders that the government is keen on addressing these concerns while promoting responsible AI deployment.
Kenya is positioning itself as a formidable player in the $244 billion global AI market. The AI strategy seeks to harness the country’s strengths in digital innovation, ensuring competitiveness in the evolving technological landscape. The plan will establish regulatory frameworks that support innovation while protecting consumers.
Public awareness initiatives will also be launched to build trust and understanding of AI’s potential benefits. By implementing a structured AI roadmap, Kenya aims to drive digital transformation, enhance public services, and stimulate economic growth through AI-driven solutions.
With this bold move, Kenya reaffirms its place as an AI pioneer in Africa, ready to leverage emerging technologies for national and economic advancement.
