Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced a monumental commitment to artificial intelligence (AI), with plans to invest between Ksh.7.7 trillion and Ksh.8.4 trillion in AI technology in 2025. In a Facebook post, Zuckerberg emphasized that this year would be pivotal for AI as Meta aims to solidify its leadership in the space.
Zuckerberg’s vision centers on Meta AI becoming the world’s leading digital assistant, used by over a billion people globally. The company is also positioning its Llama 4 model as a frontrunner in AI capabilities. To achieve these goals, Meta is creating an AI “engineer” to enhance its coding and development capacity while constructing a vast new data center dedicated to supporting its AI ambitions.
“This is a massive effort,” Zuckerberg stated. “In the coming years, it will drive our core products and business, unlock historic innovation, and extend American technology leadership.”
Meta’s announcement comes amid a surge in global AI investments. U.S. President Donald Trump recently unveiled a partnership between SoftBank and OpenAI, named Stargate, to invest at least Ksh.64.7 trillion in building AI infrastructure in the United States. The project aims to cement the U.S.’s role in AI development, but skepticism has emerged.
Tech billionaire Elon Musk, a key figure in Trump’s administration, expressed doubts about the financial feasibility of Stargate’s investors, posting on X, “The main investors don’t actually have the money.” Musk, who spent Ksh.34.9 billion during the election campaign, highlighted a rare divergence with Trump, raising questions about the viability of such large-scale AI ventures.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is on track to invest $80 billion in fiscal year 2025, focusing on building AI data centers, training advanced models, and deploying AI-powered cloud applications worldwide. Microsoft President Brad Smith noted that these efforts underscore America’s potential to lead the next wave of technological innovation, provided it strengthens international partnerships.
Meta’s bold strategy to dominate AI, alongside massive investments from other tech giants, sets the stage for 2025 to be a watershed year in AI development. As companies race to harness AI’s potential, the technology could reshape industries, drive innovation, and redefine global leadership in digital transformation.
Zuckerberg’s declaration positions Meta at the forefront of this revolution, reinforcing the belief that AI will define the future of technology and society.
