The Limuru III conference

The Limuru III conference, scheduled for May 17, 2024, in Kenya, is poised to be a significant political event, particularly for the Mt. Kenya region. This gathering, organized by Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua and Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni, aims to address various socio-political issues affecting the region. The conference is expected to bring together over ten political parties to discuss challenges such as political divisions, economic struggles, and cultural concerns within the Mt. Kenya community.

Martha Karua and Jeremiah Kioni have been vocal about the need for this conference, highlighting the perceived political and economic marginalization of the Mt. Kenya region by the current regime. They argue that the region has faced significant crises over the past two years, including poor crop prices and the collapse of local businesses. The conference seeks to unify the region’s leaders and residents to forge a collective path forward, addressing issues like high taxation, the cost of living, and declining health and education services.

However, the event has sparked controversy and opposition from some government-aligned leaders. National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah criticized the conference, labeling it a relic of divisive ethnic politics. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also expressed reservations, stating he had not been consulted about the meeting despite being a senior politician in the regio.

The Limuru III conference follows in the footsteps of previous significant gatherings, such as the original Limuru meeting in 1966, which was aimed at consolidating political power, and Limuru II in 2012, where former President Uhuru Kenyatta was positioned as the successor to President Mwai Kibaki.

As the conference date approaches, it remains to be seen how the discussions and outcomes will influence the political landscape of the Mt. Kenya region and beyond. The organizers are hopeful that it will pave the way for greater unity and a stronger collective voice for the community.
