A tragic incident unfolded in Kibera, Nairobi, on the night of Sunday, November 17, 2024, when 23-year-old Sospeter Onyango Osungo, known by his popular moniker Billionaire Evance Akoko, was stabbed to death in a mob attack. Akoko, a fourth-year architecture student at Kirinyaga University, was allegedly killed after an altercation outside a local club with a group of bodaboda riders, sparking a series of violent events that left several others injured.
Akoko, who was also known by the nickname “Sirikal,” had gained prominence on social media for his lavish lifestyle, frequently showcasing luxury cars, parties, and road trips on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. His display of wealth had earned him a significant following, with many of his peers admiring his success. However, the mystery surrounding his wealth and how he could afford such extravagance has led to growing questions.
The incident occurred when Akoko, having arrived in a luxury Audi Q3, met with friends in Kibera. He was joined by a male and female friend as they enjoyed drinks and socialized with other revellers in the area. According to witnesses, the group learned that a popular Ohangla musician was performing at a nearby club, prompting them to move to that venue. However, upon entering the club, a confrontation ensued between Akoko’s followers and a group of bodaboda riders who were present.
The bodaboda riders, feeling disrespected by Akoko’s presence and behavior, reportedly became aggressive. Witnesses stated that the situation escalated when Akoko allegedly threatened the group, claiming that he could shoot them. This remark seemingly enraged the riders, who turned violent, accusing Akoko of being a thief. In a brutal attack, Akoko was stabbed multiple times with pangas and knives, suffering fatal wounds to his stomach and back. The mob also injured his female friend and another male companion, both of whom were rushed to the hospital with stab wounds.
Akoko’s driver managed to escape the scene with the vehicle and later drove it to the local police station, where it was seized as an exhibit in the case. Police have since launched a manhunt for the gang of bodaboda riders responsible for the murder. Nairobi police boss, Adamson Bungei, condemned the mob violence and reiterated that police discourage lynchings, as they are illegal and criminal. He assured the public that authorities are doing everything possible to bring those involved in the murder to justice.
Akoko’s death follows the recent tragic passing of his fellow student, Dennis Oduor Otieno, also known as Denno Bright, just a month earlier. Otieno, like Akoko, had been known for his rapid rise to wealth and a similarly extravagant lifestyle. He attributed his fortune to Forex trading and online ventures but tragically died on October 10, 2024, at the age of 25. The cause of death was later revealed to be heart complications, with additional signs of acute pancreatitis, conditions often linked to excessive alcohol or substance use.
Both Akoko and Otieno’s deaths have sparked debates about the pressures faced by young people striving for wealth and social status in a world dominated by social media. While some view these young men as symbols of success, others question the ethics and sources of their wealth, with suspicions surrounding possible illegal activities.
Akoko’s sudden death has left his family, particularly his mother, devastated. His passing is a stark reminder of the dangers of violence in urban slums and the tragic consequences of unchecked mob justice. As police continue to investigate the murder, the community is left to reflect on the loss of a promising young life and the complexities surrounding the pursuit of wealth and fame in today’s digital age.
