Kenya witnessed a series of tragic incidents over the weekend, with multiple deaths reported in different parts of the country. From domestic violence to electrocution and sudden collapses, these incidents have left families and communities in mourning.
Kibera Domestic Dispute Turns Fatal
In Kibera, Nairobi, a 54-year-old Ugandan woman, Agnes Wetunga, lost her life in a domestic dispute that turned deadly on the night of Sunday, February 2. Her husband confessed to police that a quarrel escalated into physical violence, resulting in him striking her fatally on the head.
Authorities found Wetunga’s body on the bed, with a deep cut on her forehead and blood oozing from her mouth. Her body has since been taken to Nairobi Funeral Home for postmortem, while police have arrested her husband and are treating the case as a murder investigation.
Mother Electrocuted in Kibera While Rescuing Daughter
In another tragic incident in Kibera’s Gatwekera area, Pamela Phoebe Otiende, 44, was electrocuted while trying to rescue her daughter. The young girl had been hanging clothes on a line when she accidentally touched a live wire that had been improperly connected.
As she screamed for help, her mother rushed to rescue her but was fatally electrocuted in the process. Both were rushed to Coptic Hospital, where Pamela was pronounced dead on arrival. Her daughter, however, survived and remains in stable condition.
Police have noted that cases of electrocution remain high in informal settlements, where illegal electrical connections are common and pose significant risks to residents. Authorities continue to urge people to report unsafe wiring to prevent such tragedies.
Sudden Deaths in Kiambu and Nyeri
Elsewhere, in Kingeero, Kiambu County, 55-year-old Rhoda Wanjiru collapsed and died in her house. Her family rushed her to Wangige Level Five Hospital, but she was pronounced dead on arrival. Her body was later transferred to Kihara Hospital mortuary, where a postmortem is expected to determine the cause of death.
Similarly, in Nyeri’s Wambugu Farm area within Ruringu, Mugure Wairimu also collapsed after complaining of severe chest pains. She was rushed to Outspan Hospital in Nyeri but was also pronounced dead on arrival. Authorities are awaiting autopsy results to ascertain the cause of her sudden death.
Rising Concerns Over Domestic and Safety Issues
These tragic incidents highlight growing concerns over domestic violence, electrical safety in informal settlements, and undiagnosed health conditions leading to sudden deaths. Authorities continue to call for increased awareness, medical checkups, and improved living conditions to mitigate these fatalities.
