At least 32 people lost their lives on Monday in two separate and tragic bus crashes in Mexico, authorities confirmed. The incidents occurred in different regions of the country, highlighting the persistent dangers of road travel in Mexico.
The first accident took place along a highway in Oaxaca, a southern state known for its mountainous terrain. A bus overturned near the community of Santo Domingo Narro, leading to the deaths of 18 people. Twelve others sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment, the state government reported in an official statement. Authorities have announced an investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
Mexican media outlets revealed that the victims of the Oaxaca crash were supporters of the ruling left-wing party. They were returning from a political rally in Mexico City, where President Claudia Sheinbaum had spoken out against US President Donald Trump’s trade tariff policy.
Meanwhile, in northern Mexico, another fatal crash occurred in Durango state, where a collision between a tractor-trailer and a passenger bus resulted in 14 deaths. The bus, which was transporting passengers from the US state of Texas, caught fire following the impact. Out of the 24 individuals on board, only 10 managed to escape the flames alive, according to civil protection authorities.
Road accidents remain a significant issue in Mexico, where high speeds, poor vehicle maintenance, inadequate road conditions, and driver fatigue contribute to frequent and deadly collisions. According to various sources, at least 15,000 people lose their lives in road accidents across the country each year.
These latest tragedies add to an already grim record. Earlier this year, on February 8, a devastating collision between a truck and a bus in Mexico’s southeastern state of Campeche resulted in the deaths of 38 people.
As the country mourns the victims of these latest crashes, calls for improved road safety measures have intensified. Experts emphasize the need for better vehicle inspections, stricter traffic enforcement, and enhanced road infrastructure to reduce the frequency of such fatal incidents.
Authorities are expected to release further details as investigations into both crashes progress.
