Nestled against the breathtaking Rocky Mountains, Denver, the Mile High City, is a dynamic blend of urban sophistication and rugged Wild West heritage. With towering skyscrapers and a vibrant arts scene, this city offers much more than meets the eye. For Wesley Schultz, the frontman of the internationally acclaimed folk-rock band The Lumineers, Denver is more than just a home it’s a place that nurtured his band’s signature sound and propelled them to fame. Moving to Denver in 2009, Schultz and his bandmate Jeremiah Fraites found the space to create the energetic folk-rock that has defined their music.
“I love it here,” Schultz says. “The weather is gorgeous, the people are friendly, and it’s full of transplants like us. It was just a chance we took, and when we got here, it was beautiful.”
As a longtime Denver resident, Schultz has discovered some of the city’s best spots to visit. From world-class venues like Red Rocks Amphitheatre to family-friendly museums and scenic outdoor parks, here’s Schultz’s perfect weekend guide to Denver.
For Schultz, spending time with family is essential. One of his favorite family-friendly destinations is the Children’s Museum of Denver, a space designed for kids to engage in creative play while their parents unwind. The museum offers hands-on exhibits, like climbing structures, tool stations for building, and even a mini “supermarket” for imaginative play.
“The kids get to be themselves, explore, and have fun. It’s great for new families,” Schultz explains. The outdoor park also offers water exhibits, climbing areas, and a zipline—perfect for energetic children. Parents can relax with a local craft beer as they watch the fun unfold.
When it comes to food, Denver is a melting pot of diverse flavors. But for Schultz, one spot stands out: El Taco de Mexico, an unassuming yet legendary eatery on Santa Fe Drive. Founded by Mexico City native MaLuisa Zanabria, the restaurant has been serving up delicious Mexico City-style street food since 1985. Its cult following includes local musicians and food lovers alike.
“It’s the kind of place all the musicians know about,” says Schultz, recalling his first visit when a guitarist from Cheap Trick was dining there before a Red Rocks show. With menu items like chile rellenos burritos smothered in green chili, this low-key gem is a must-try for anyone visiting Denver.
Just a short drive from downtown Denver, Golden Gate Canyon State Park offers a serene escape into nature. The park features 56 kilometers of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails, perfect for anyone looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Visitors can explore lush alpine streams, rocky peaks, and expansive meadows. Schultz is a fan of the park, calling it one of the best spots for a scenic hike close to Denver.
“You feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, but it’s not far from the city at all,” he says. For those who want to extend their adventure, the park also offers camping sites and rustic cabins.
For a more laid-back night out, Schultz recommends PS Lounge, a quirky dive bar that’s become a local staple. With its retro atmosphere, free pool table, and eccentric owner, Pete Siahamis, PS Lounge is the perfect spot for a low-key evening with friends. It’s a place where you can unwind while listening to classic jukebox tunes, all while enjoying a sugary Alabama Slammer shot served with a single rose.
If you’re looking to experience the artistic heartbeat of Denver, the RiNo (River North) District is the place to be. Once an industrial area, RiNo has transformed into a vibrant arts hub with colorful murals, trendy shops, and a variety of bars and restaurants. Schultz describes it as one of his favorite places to take visitors.
“It’s a really fun place to walk around,” he says, noting the district’s accessibility by foot or bike. Whether you’re checking out the art scene or grabbing a bite to eat, RiNo offers a taste of Denver’s everyday life.
For an intimate and memorable drink experience, Schultz recommends Sunday Vinyl, a Mediterranean tapas bar near Union Station. Known for its impeccable wine selection and vinyl-only soundtrack, Sunday Vinyl offers a unique ambiance. The bar even hosts themed nights where a vinyl record is paired with a drink, creating a multisensory experience for guests.
From scenic hikes to delicious food and rich local culture, Denver offers something for everyone. Whether you’re a fan of great music, outdoor adventures, or just soaking in the city’s artistic vibe, Denver is a must-visit destination.
