Motorists traveling between Ramsey and Onchan along the Isle of Man’s eastern coastal road will need to adjust their routes as daytime closures are in effect for essential road maintenance. The closures, which began recently, will last until March 7, with work scheduled to take place between 09:30 and 16:30 GMT on weekdays.
The primary purpose of the closures is to replace the reflective road studs, which have deteriorated over time and are no longer effective. Additionally, new center lines will be painted along sections of the road to improve visibility and enhance road safety. The Department of Infrastructure (DOI) has assured the public that while the closures are in place, access for emergency services, scheduled buses, pedestrians, and residents requiring entry to their properties will be maintained.
Alternative Routes and Traffic Diversions
During the closure periods, traffic will be diverted onto the A18 Mountain Road, which serves as the primary alternative route connecting the Manx capital to the north. However, the DOI has also put contingency measures in place in case of unforeseen circumstances. If the A18 Mountain Road itself requires closure for any reason, work on the coastal road will be temporarily paused to ensure continuous traffic flow.
The closures specifically impact the stretch of the A2 road between Onchan and Ramsey, with work beginning on the section between Ballure and the Dremskerry Road junction before gradually extending toward Onchan. The DOI has also clarified that road studs will only be installed on areas where the speed limit exceeds 30mph (48km/h), meaning some urban sections with lower speed limits will not receive new studs.

The project, managed by Manx Rock Ltd., is largely dependent on weather conditions. Wet or extremely cold weather could prevent the adhesive used for securing the studs from setting correctly. If adverse weather conditions arise, the DOI has stated that closures will be temporarily lifted until work can safely resume.
