The much-anticipated Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is set to revolutionize travel between India’s capital, Delhi, and the scenic city of Dehradun in Uttarakhand. Expected to be completed by January 2025, this 210-kilometer access-controlled expressway, developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), will significantly reduce travel time from the current 6.5 hours to just 2.5 hours. This infrastructure marvel is a part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana, an ambitious national highway development program aimed at enhancing India’s connectivity and economic growth.
The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway will be a six to twelve-lane highway, ensuring a smooth and efficient driving experience. The route has been strategically planned to facilitate the movement of passengers and goods across key towns, including Baghpat, Shamli, and Saharanpur. Designed to support high-speed travel, the expressway will also incorporate advanced safety measures, including smart traffic management systems, emergency response services, and modern amenities such as rest areas every 25-30 kilometers.
The construction has been divided into four major phases:
Phase 1: A 32-kilometer stretch from Delhi’s Akshardham Temple to Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, which has already been completed.
Phase 2: The longest section, spanning 118 kilometers from Baghpat to Saharanpur, is currently under construction, with some portions already accessible to the public.
Phase 3: Covers 40 kilometers from Saharanpur to Ganeshpur, playing a crucial role in bridging the gap between Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Phase 4: The final 20-kilometer section from Rajaji National Park to Dehradun, featuring an innovative 12-kilometer elevated wildlife corridor and a 340-meter tunnel to protect the region’s rich biodiversity.
The expressway will include over 110 underpasses, five railway overbridges, four major bridges, and 16 entry-exit points, ensuring seamless movement for commuters and freight transportation. With a maximum speed limit of 100 km/h, travelers can expect a safe and efficient journey.
One of the expressway’s most innovative aspects is the wildlife-friendly infrastructure. The elevated wildlife corridor and tunnel are designed to minimize the impact on the region’s ecosystem, allowing free movement of animals while ensuring uninterrupted traffic flow. Apart from reducing travel time, the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is expected to bring significant economic benefits to the region. The expressway will operate on a distance-based toll system, ensuring that users pay according to the length of their journey. However, the first 18 kilometers from Akshardham Temple to Loni will be toll-free, allowing commuters to benefit from an initial hassle-free segment.
While the exact toll charges have yet to be announced, the government is expected to implement a fair pricing system, considering affordability for daily commuters and businesses.
