Four people lost their lives in a tragic road accident on Saturday evening in the Tapaach area along the Moroto-Napak road in Uganda. The deceased were reportedly part of a delegation accompanying Pokot South MP David Pkosing on a cross-border tour between Kenya and Uganda.
West Pokot County Commissioner Khaliff Abdullahi confirmed the incident, stating that investigations are underway in collaboration with Ugandan authorities to determine the exact cause of the crash. Authorities have yet to officially release the identities of the victims, as their families are being informed.
However, local sources indicate that two of the deceased were politicians, with one having contested for the Kapenguria MP seat in the 2022 general elections, while the other had previously vied for a Member of County Assembly (MCA) position. The accident has sent shockwaves through the local political circles, with leaders and residents expressing their grief over the loss.
Following the crash, Kenyan and Ugandan authorities coordinated efforts to repatriate the bodies. The remains have since been transported to Cherangany Mortuary in Kitale, where arrangements for their final rites are expected to take place.
Among the survivors of the accident is Sook Ward MCA Martin Komongiro, who sustained injuries. He has been transferred to Eldoret for specialized medical treatment. His condition remains unclear as doctors continue to monitor his recovery.
The incident has raised concerns about road safety along the Moroto-Napak route, a key link between the two neighboring countries. Leaders have called for improved road infrastructure and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The accident comes as a major blow to the delegation that had embarked on the cross-border tour, aimed at strengthening ties between communities in Kenya and Uganda. As investigations continue, leaders and residents alike are mourning the loss of the individuals who were actively engaged in political and community affairs.
Authorities are urging travelers to exercise caution and adhere to safety measures when using the region’s roads. More details on the investigation findings are expected to be released in the coming days.
