G Adventures is expanding its portfolio by introducing its first-ever tours in Pakistan, launching in June. These new travel experiences will offer adventure enthusiasts a chance to explore Pakistan’s stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and remote communities. The company has designed three different itineraries, ranging from nine to thirteen days, catering to travelers looking for an immersive and active journey.
Two of the new itineraries fall under G Adventures’ Active line of tours, focusing on trekking the Thallay La Trail. This historic route once served as the primary connection between the ancient kingdoms of Khaplu and Shigar, playing a crucial role in trade. However, with modern roads replacing traditional pathways, the trail is now mainly used by hikers and local shepherds.
To ensure a positive impact on the local economy, G Adventures has partnered with villagers in the Thallay Valley, providing employment opportunities as porters, chefs, and guides. Given the region’s relative isolation near the Ladakh border with India, tourism is scarce outside of climbers heading toward K2. This initiative aims to create sustainable economic benefits for the local communities.
According to Yves Marceau, G Adventures’ vice president of product, the tour season in this area is short, and the trips have been carefully planned to maximize economic contributions to the region within this limited window.
Trekkers embarking on the Thallay La Trail tours will gain firsthand insights into the historical significance of the route. Along the way, they will witness breathtaking mountain scenery and experience the lifestyle of traders who once traveled this path centuries ago. Accommodation will include stays in heritage forts and castles in Khaplu and Shigar, which have been converted into boutique hotels to support sustainable tourism development.
“While travelers will have a comfortable beginning and end to their journey, the trekking portion will closely resemble the experiences of ancient traders navigating the region,” said G Adventures in a statement.
For younger travelers seeking an alternative to intense trekking, G Adventures has designed the “Karakoram Highway, Local Eats & Village Life” itinerary. Tailored for adventurers aged 18 to 39, this journey begins in Lahore and ventures into lesser-explored regions of Pakistan.
Lahore, renowned for its vibrant culture, historic sites, and flavorful cuisine, serves as the starting point. Highlights include visits to the Badshahi Mosque and the ancient Walled City of Lahore before heading towards the Lesser Himalayas. A significant highlight of this trip is an intimate meal with a local family in Hunza village, offering travelers an authentic taste of Pakistani hospitality.
For those looking for a physically demanding challenge, the “Hike the Karakoram Mountains” itinerary offers an unforgettable trekking experience. This nine-day adventure is rated as a demanding activity level and begins in Islamabad before flying to Skardu. From there, travelers drive to Khaplu town before setting off on a five-day trek along the Thallay La Trail.
During the hike, travelers will trek alongside local villagers, experiencing the rugged beauty of the region and ultimately summiting Thallay La Mountain. The tour concludes with a return to Islamabad.
A slightly longer version, the “Lahore & Hiking the Karakoram Mountains” itinerary, extends the journey to eleven days. After summiting the mountain, travelers will visit Lahore, where they will explore the city’s lively streets, sample street food, and witness the famous Wagah Border ceremony between Pakistan and India.
G Adventures’ launch of these Pakistan tours represents an effort to introduce travelers to a lesser-known destination while ensuring a sustainable impact on local communities. With a mix of trekking, cultural experiences, and historical exploration, these itineraries offer an enriching way to discover Pakistan beyond the typical tourist path.
By collaborating with local villagers and emphasizing economic sustainability, G Adventures is setting a precedent for responsible tourism in remote regions. These tours provide adventurers with the opportunity to explore some of the world’s most breathtaking landscapes while directly contributing to the livelihoods of the communities they visit.
