The national government has announced a significant investment of Sh700 million for the modernization of the Garissa airstrip in a joint project with the Garissa county government. The long-overdue upgrade aims to improve infrastructure, increase economic activity, and enhance transportation within the region.
President William Ruto, accompanied by his deputy Kithure Kindiki and other local leaders, officially launched the renovation project during his development tour in the North Eastern region. The airstrip, originally constructed in 1984, has never undergone a major upgrade, making this initiative a crucial step toward revitalizing air transport in Garissa.
Speaking during the launch, President Ruto underscored the importance of the airstrip in driving economic growth and improving connectivity. He acknowledged the challenges that travelers have faced over the years, including inadequate waiting areas.
“Some time back, people here were forced to shelter under a tree while waiting for their flights, but today, I am here to launch the construction of a modern terminal,” Ruto remarked.
The modernization project will involve several critical upgrades, including extending and refurbishing the runway to accommodate larger aircraft. The county government has also allocated funds for the construction of a new terminal building, which is already underway. The improved facility is expected to attract more airlines, leading to the introduction of regular flights between Garissa and Nairobi.
The upgraded airstrip is expected to have a profound impact on the region’s economy by facilitating trade and investment. With improved connectivity, businesses will benefit from faster and more efficient transport of goods and services. The project aligns with the government’s broader plan to boost economic activity in North Eastern Kenya by enhancing infrastructure.
In addition to commercial benefits, the upgraded airstrip will play a crucial role in humanitarian aid and medical emergencies. The facility will support emergency evacuations and the delivery of essential supplies, particularly during droughts and other crises affecting the region.
To ensure the safety and efficiency of the airstrip, additional infrastructure developments are planned. The project includes the construction of a perimeter wall to enhance security, a car park for passengers and staff, and a modern entrance gate. These improvements aim to provide a safe and well-organized environment for travelers and aviation personnel.
President Ruto’s visit to Garissa is part of a broader development tour covering various counties in the region. His itinerary includes stops in Mandera, Wajir, Isiolo, and Marsabit, where he is overseeing various development projects aimed at boosting infrastructure, security, and economic growth.
As the Garissa airstrip upgrade progresses, residents and stakeholders remain optimistic that the improved facility will transform transportation and unlock new economic opportunities for the region.
