Nairobi motorists should brace for a month-long traffic disruption at the Haile Selassie roundabout, following an announcement by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KenHA). The disruption, which begins today, Monday, March 3, will run until Monday, April 7, 2025, as construction of a pedestrian underpass gets underway.
KenHA Director General Eng. Kung’u Ndung’u stated that the temporary disruption is necessary to facilitate the infrastructure upgrade aimed at improving pedestrian movement and safety at the busy intersection. He urged road users to adhere to the traffic management plan put in place to ease congestion and ensure smooth movement during the period.
“We understand that this will cause inconvenience, but we ask for patience and cooperation from all motorists and pedestrians. The project is crucial in enhancing safety and easing congestion in the long run,” said Eng. Ndung’u.
The construction of the pedestrian underpass is part of the government’s broader strategy to improve Nairobi’s road infrastructure and enhance non-motorized transport facilities. Over the years, the Haile Selassie roundabout has been a hotspot for traffic snarl-ups, and this development is expected to provide long-term relief for both motorists and pedestrians.
Meanwhile, the National Government has reiterated its commitment to reinvesting toll revenues into infrastructure development. The Ministry of Roads and Transport, in collaboration with key stakeholders, is currently conducting public participation forums across the country to discuss the proposed Road Tolling Policy.
The sessions aim to inform residents, transport operators, and local leaders about the objectives and implementation strategies of the policy. According to the Ministry, the policy will enhance transparency and accountability in toll revenue collection while ensuring sustainable funding for road maintenance and development.
The adoption of modern payment systems is also a key focus of the discussions, with the government exploring digital tolling solutions to streamline payments and reduce delays at toll points.
As Nairobi continues to undergo infrastructural transformation, road users are advised to stay updated on traffic advisories and plan their routes accordingly to minimize disruptions.
