The Kenya National Highways Authority (Kenha) has mapped out alternative routes to help travellers avoid traffic congestion as the highly anticipated World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally begins. With the three-day event occupying key roads along Nairobi and Naivasha, Kenha has urged drivers to remain cautious, observe speed limits, and stay alert while using these alternative routes.
In an official statement, Kenha highlighted the impact of the rally on road transport and provided alternative routes to facilitate smooth travel. The four mapped-out routes include:
- The Scenic Route: Nairobi – Rironi – Flyover (Magumu) – Njabini – Ol Kalou – Dundori – Lanet.
- The Adventure Route: Nairobi – Rironi – Naivasha – Engineer – Ol Kalou – Dundori – Lanet.
- The Thika Trail: Nairobi – Thika – Magumu – Ol Kalou – Dundori – Lanet.
- The Suswa Shortcut: Nairobi – Ngong Town – Kibiko – Suswa.
Kenha has advised motorists to be extra careful, particularly along the gravel stretches, and recommended 4×4 vehicles for better navigation.
The WRC Safari Rally officially kicked off on Thursday, March 20, 2025, with President William Ruto flagging off the event at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC). The ceremonial start was followed by the Super Special Kasarani (4.76km) and Mzabibu 1 (8.15km) races.
The competition intensifies on Friday with races set to take place in Naivasha. On Saturday, the rally will continue with the thrilling Sleeping Warrior stage. The final day on Sunday will feature races at Oserengoni 1 (18.33km) and Hell’s Gate 2 (10.53km), culminating in the award ceremony at 15:30 at the Podium.
More than 100,000 spectators are expected to flock to Naivasha to witness the high-speed action, making traffic management a top priority.
On Wednesday, the government issued a safety advisory to rally fans, urging them to exercise caution while watching the race. Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya emphasized the importance of safety, reminding fans that rally cars are fast and unpredictable. He shared this message during his visit to the championship headquarters at the Kenya Wildlife Training Institute (KWRI) in Naivasha.
With over 50 drivers competing for the top spot, the WRC Safari Rally promises an exhilarating experience for motorsport enthusiasts. Motorists and fans are encouraged to plan their travel accordingly and adhere to safety guidelines for an enjoyable and incident-free event.
