The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a scheduled temporary night-time closure of a section of the Thika Superhighway at Kihunguro to allow for essential maintenance works. The closure will begin on the night of Friday, April 11 and run through to the morning of Monday, April 14, with works taking place daily between 11:00pm and 4:00am.
In a statement released by KeNHA Director General Kung’u Ndungu, the authority advised motorists traveling between Nairobi and Thika to use designated service lanes during the affected hours. To ensure smooth traffic flow, a traffic diversion plan has been developed, and marshals will be stationed at key points to assist drivers and minimize disruptions.
“KeNHA advises all road users to adhere to the traffic management plan, observe road signage, and cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals on-site,” the notice read.
The scheduled works are part of KeNHA’s broader mandate to maintain and improve the quality of road infrastructure across the country. Regular maintenance of key transport corridors is crucial to sustaining Kenya’s economic growth and ensuring road safety for all users.
The Thika Superhighway is a critical infrastructure asset linking Nairobi to the populous Central Kenya region. Spanning 50 kilometers, the highway features 8 to 12 lanes and plays a vital role in easing traffic congestion in and out of Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).
Originally constructed under the administration of the late President Mwai Kibaki, the Thika Superhighway was completed in 2012. Its construction began in 2009 and transformed the existing four-lane road into a modern expressway with underpasses and flyovers replacing outdated roundabouts.
The ambitious project was funded through a mix of financing, including $180 million from the African Development Bank, $100 million from the Exim Bank of China, and $80 million from the Kenyan government.
KeNHA assures the public that the works are scheduled during off-peak hours to reduce inconvenience and that every effort will be made to complete the maintenance swiftly and efficiently. Motorists are urged to plan their travel accordingly.
