The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued six critical road safety directives for motorists ahead of the Easter holidays, as part of efforts to reduce road accidents during the festive season. These measures are being implemented in the wake of several fatal crashes in the days leading up to the holiday period, and they aim to ensure safer travel for everyone.
At the top of the list is a strong reminder for drivers to adhere to speed limits. Excessive speed remains one of the primary causes of accidents on Kenyan roads, especially during high-traffic periods like the Easter rush. By sticking to the recommended speed limits, drivers can significantly reduce their chances of being involved in an accident and have more time to react to sudden changes on the road.
Along with adhering to speed limits, drivers are also urged to maintain sobriety. The NTSA has highlighted the importance of driving sober, calling it “the silent hero of every safe trip home.” Drunk driving continues to be a major contributor to road fatalities in Kenya, especially during festive seasons when celebrations often lead to excessive alcohol consumption. The authorities have warned drivers against the temptation to drive under the influence of alcohol and have reminded them of the legal consequences, which include heavy fines and potential imprisonment.
In the event that a vehicle breaks down or stalls on the road, vehicle owners have been instructed to remove the vehicle as quickly as possible to avoid causing a hazard. If the vehicle cannot be moved immediately, owners must take precautionary measures, such as placing reflective warning signs to alert approaching traffic. This directive aims to prevent accidents that often occur when drivers fail to see stalled vehicles in time, especially in low-visibility conditions or at night.
The NTSA also emphasizes the need for adequate rest before embarking on long journeys. Fatigue is a major contributor to road accidents, and drivers are encouraged to plan their trips in advance, ensuring they have ample time for rest before getting behind the wheel. Planning for breaks during the journey is equally important to maintain focus and alertness, as tired drivers are more prone to making errors that can lead to crashes.
Before taking to the road, motorists are advised to ensure their vehicles are in optimal condition. Routine vehicle servicing is essential for identifying and addressing potential mechanical issues that could cause breakdowns or accidents. Properly maintained vehicles are less likely to experience failures that could put the driver, passengers, and other road users at risk. Vehicle owners are encouraged to take their cars to reputable service centers for pre-trip checks, especially during the busy holiday season.
Lastly, the NTSA has urged the public to play an active role in road safety by reporting instances of reckless driving. Motorists who witness dangerous driving behaviors are encouraged to report these incidents to the police using the 911 hotline. This initiative seeks to empower citizens to help reduce traffic violations and hold offenders accountable for their actions, thereby contributing to safer roads.
These directives come in the wake of a series of new measures introduced by the NTSA to curb drunk driving and improve overall road safety. Among these measures is the return of breathalyzer tests, or “alocoblows,” on major roads, which are aimed at deterring drunk driving during the holiday season. Drivers found to be over the legal alcohol limit face stiff penalties, including fines of up to Ksh 100,000 or imprisonment for up to two years, or both.
Additionally, new regulations have been introduced concerning vehicle inspections. These include mandatory checks for both private and public service vehicles, school buses, commercial vehicles, and vehicles used in driving schools. The Traffic (Drink-Driving) Rules 2025, the Traffic (Motor Vehicle Inspection) Rules 2025, and other related regulations are part of a broader strategy to reduce road fatalities, particularly in the face of rising accidents across the country.
The NTSA’s directives and the implementation of these new laws are part of a comprehensive effort to enhance road safety and reduce the number of road accidents during the Easter holiday period. By following these safety measures, drivers can help ensure that the holiday season remains a time for celebration rather than tragedy.
