In recent years, HBO’s hit series The White Lotus has captivated audiences with its satirical take on the lives of wealthy vacationers, luxury travel, and deep-seated human drama. The show, written and directed by Mike White, has previously transported viewers to stunning resorts in Hawaii and Sicily. Now, with season three set in Thailand, the series is once again expected to inspire a surge in tourism.
The highly anticipated third season, premiering on February 16, 2025, features an impressive cast, including Carrie Coon, Michelle Monaghan, Jason Isaacs, and Thailand’s very own K-pop star, Lalisa “Lisa” Manobal. With breathtaking landscapes, opulent resorts, and cultural landmarks on display, Thailand is set to experience what many are calling “The White Lotus effect.”
As with previous seasons, Thailand’s luxurious resorts and picturesque locations play a key role in shaping the show’s narrative. While much of the season was filmed on Koh Samui, additional scenes were shot in Phuket, Bangkok, and nearby islands, creating a visually captivating setting for the show’s drama to unfold.
Koh Samui, Thailand’s second-largest island, is at the center of The White Lotus season three. Known for its pristine beaches, upscale resorts, and vibrant nightlife, the island is the perfect backdrop for the show’s signature mix of decadence and chaos.
Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui serves as the fictional White Lotus Resort & Spa. This luxurious property, set against a backdrop of lush greenery and turquoise waters, will feature prominently throughout the season.
Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort’s Singing Bird Lounge doubles as the show’s main bar, adding to the show’s glamorous appeal.
Anantara Bophut Koh Samui provides the setting for several other key locations, including the resort’s lobby, driveway, security station, and jewelry store.
Choeng Mon Beach, Cape Fahn Hotel, and Pi Samui Beach Club are among the other sites used for filming, showcasing the island’s diverse attractions.
Additionally, nearby Koh Phangan’s Haad Rin Beach, famous for its Full Moon parties, will make an appearance, reinforcing the island’s reputation as a global party destination. Arrival scenes were also filmed at Mu Ko Ang Thong National Marine Park, a breathtaking archipelago known for its limestone cliffs and secluded beaches.
Thailand’s largest island, Phuket, serves as another key filming location for season three. HBO has confirmed several locations where scenes were shot:
Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Resort was used for scenes featuring Belinda, the beloved spa manager returning from season one.
Rosewood Phuket’s Ta Khai restaurant provides the setting for pivotal dinner scenes.
Other sites featured include Ya Nui Beach, Bangla Boxing, Phuket Yacht Haven Marina, and Café Del Mar, adding variety to the show’s already stunning visual landscape.
Some arrival scenes were filmed on Ko Lawa Yai, a picturesque island near Phang Nga Bay.
Thailand’s bustling capital, Bangkok, makes a brief but noteworthy appearance in The White Lotus. The legendary Mandarin Oriental Hotel, one of the city’s most prestigious hotels, is among the featured locations, adding a touch of grandeur to the season.
With each season of The White Lotus, the show’s filming locations have experienced a massive boost in tourism. Following season two, set in Sicily, searches for accommodations at the San Domenico Palace, a Four Seasons Hotel, increased by 300%.
Similarly, Thailand is already seeing a surge in interest. Reports indicate a 40% rise in searches for Koh Samui hotels ahead of the season premiere, and travel companies are launching White Lotus-themed vacation packages.
Thailand’s Tourism Authority is embracing the show’s global appeal. “We are honored to have amazing Thailand featured as the filming location for The White Lotus,” said Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand. “Our country’s exotic natural beauty, rich historical sites, and luxury resorts make for the perfect setting.”
In 2024, Thailand welcomed over 35 million international tourists, generating $53.5 billion in revenue. Officials now aim to attract 39-40 million visitors in 2025, a return to pre-pandemic levels. With The White Lotus bringing global attention to the country’s top destinations, Thailand’s tourism sector could see an even bigger boom.
Season three of The White Lotus promises to be one of the most visually stunning yet, thanks to Thailand’s breathtaking scenery and world-class resorts. As fans eagerly anticipate the premiere, the country’s tourism industry is gearing up for an influx of travelers eager to experience the beauty, culture, and luxury showcased on screen. Whether exploring Koh Samui’s beaches, Phuket’s hidden gems, or Bangkok’s historic landmarks, visitors can now create their own White Lotus adventure in the Land of Smiles.
