Motorists using Thika Superhighway should brace for temporary disruptions as a section of the road at Juja Highpoint (Centurion) will be closed from Saturday, February 15, 2025, to Tuesday, February 18, 2025. The closure, which will take effect between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. each night, is to facilitate the construction of a new footbridge aimed at improving pedestrian safety.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced the planned closure, emphasizing that it is necessary to enhance infrastructure and reduce pedestrian accidents along the busy highway. KeNHA reassured road users that adequate diversions have been put in place to ensure smooth traffic flow during the construction period.
Traffic Diversion Plan
To minimize inconvenience, KeNHA has provided alternative routes for both Nairobi-bound and Thika-bound motorists.
- Nairobi-bound traffic will be redirected through a diversion behind Lexo Petrol Station before rejoining Thika Superhighway.
- Thika-bound traffic will use a diversion behind Centurion Hotel before merging back onto the highway.
Motorists are advised to adhere to the traffic management plan and exercise caution while navigating the diversions. Signage and traffic marshals will be deployed to guide drivers and ensure order.
Importance of the Footbridge
The construction of the footbridge at Juja Highpoint is a crucial step toward improving pedestrian safety along the highway. The area has been identified as a high-risk zone for pedestrians attempting to cross the road, leading to frequent accidents and fatalities. By installing the footbridge, authorities aim to provide a safer crossing point and enhance overall traffic efficiency.
Motorists and Commuters Urged to Plan Ahead
With the closure affecting nighttime travel, motorists, especially long-distance drivers, are encouraged to plan their journeys accordingly to avoid delays. Commuters using public transport should also anticipate possible changes in their usual routes and allocate extra travel time.
KeNHA has called on all road users to cooperate and observe traffic guidelines during this period. “We understand that this closure may cause temporary inconvenience, but it is necessary for the safety and long-term efficiency of our road network,” the authority stated.
Upon completion, the footbridge is expected to significantly ease pedestrian movement while reducing accidents at the busy Juja Highpoint section of the superhighway. Motorists and pedestrians alike can look forward to improved road safety and enhanced infrastructure in the area.
