Tragedy struck late last night when three male students from South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) lost their lives in a fatal road accident in Kwa Vonza, Kitui County.
According to Kwa Vonza area chief Ronald Mbuvi, the three students were riding on a motorcycle from the university to their residence when they crashed into the back of a stationary sand truck. The truck had been parked by the roadside due to a mechanical failure, leading to the horrific collision.
The impact of the crash was fatal, and all three students died on the spot. Police officers from Kwa Vonza Police Station responded swiftly to the accident scene, launching an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Their preliminary reports suggest that poor visibility and the truck’s position may have contributed to the crash.
Following the accident, the bodies of the deceased were transported to the Kitui Hospital mortuary as authorities continued with their inquiries. The tragic loss has left the SEKU community in mourning, with students and staff struggling to come to terms with the devastating news.
This incident has once again raised concerns over road safety, particularly regarding parked trucks on highways and the vulnerability of motorcycle riders at night. Residents and students are now calling for stricter enforcement of road safety measures, including proper signage for stalled vehicles and improved lighting on roads near the university.
As investigations continue, friends and family of the deceased are preparing to bid them a final farewell. The university administration is expected to issue a statement offering condolences and support to those affected by this heartbreaking accident.
This tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the dangers on Kenyan roads, especially for young riders traveling at night.
