A tragic incident unfolded in Migori County on Saturday evening when a student identified as Tony Onyango lost his life after being hit by a speeding police vehicle that allegedly fled the scene.
According to eyewitnesses, Onyango was riding a motorcycle with a minor passenger when the police vehicle, reportedly travelling at a very high speed toward Rongo, struck them. The impact was so severe that Onyango died on the spot. The minor sustained injuries and was quickly rushed to Rongo Sub-County Hospital for treatment.
South Kamagambo Location Chief David Onyango confirmed the incident and expressed deep concern over the behavior of the police officers involved. He revealed that the student had just left a local cyber café, where he had gone to apply for a course online an errand that tragically turned fatal.
“The young man was full of hope and ambition. It’s heartbreaking that his life ended in such a manner,” said Chief Onyango.
Eyewitnesses at the scene condemned the hit-and-run nature of the accident, accusing the police vehicle of failing to stop and assist the victims. They have called on authorities to take immediate action to identify the officers involved and ensure justice is served.
The incident has sparked outrage in the local community, with residents decrying what they describe as increasing cases of police recklessness and impunity. Many are demanding thorough investigations and accountability from the law enforcement agencies.
