Four family members tragically lost their lives in a horrific road accident on the night of Sunday, April 6, 2025, along Siaya-Nyadorera Road, specifically in the Kagoya area. The deceased, a father, his two sons, and their house help, died at the scene after a head-on collision between a saloon car and a school bus.
The father, a 47-year-old businessman from Port Victoria, had been driving his family home from Siaya, heading towards Nyadorera when the unfortunate accident occurred. The collision took place as the saloon car attempted to overtake a lorry but ended up crashing into the oncoming school bus, which was owned by Yogo Academy.
The father, his two sons aged 5 and 10, and the house help were all killed instantly in the impact. The vehicle was severely damaged, and the four victims were trapped inside. Emergency responders and local authorities quickly arrived at the scene but were unable to save the lives of the family members. The businessman’s wife and another child, who were also in the car, were severely injured and rushed to Siaya County Referral Hospital for treatment. Their condition remains critical as they fight for survival.
The driver of the school bus was also severely injured in the accident. He, along with the surviving family members, was transported to Siaya County Referral Hospital, where they received immediate medical attention. Fortunately, the students aboard the bus, which was traveling from the academy, escaped unharmed.
The cause of the accident has not been officially determined, but it is believed that the driver of the saloon car was attempting to overtake a lorry when he collided head-on with the bus. This kind of reckless overtaking on roads, especially at night, has often led to tragic accidents, underscoring the importance of caution and road safety measures.
Local authorities, including Usonga Location Chief Paul Kanoti, confirmed the tragic details of the incident. Chief Kanoti stated that the four bodies were removed from the wreckage and taken to the Siaya County Referral Hospital mortuary for preservation pending postmortem examination. This step is part of the ongoing investigation into the cause of the crash, which has left the local community in shock and mourning.
In the aftermath of the incident, Siaya County has been shaken by the loss of the family members, and the local community has come together to offer support to the surviving relatives. Family and friends are grappling with the immense loss of four loved ones in a single, devastating moment.
This accident serves as a grim reminder of the importance of road safety, particularly on rural roads where vehicles may not always be easily visible. Authorities have urged drivers to exercise greater caution when overtaking other vehicles and to be extra vigilant while driving, especially during nighttime hours when visibility is reduced. Additionally, the incident calls attention to the safety of public service vehicles, such as school buses, and the need for regular maintenance and vigilant drivers to ensure the safety of all passengers, particularly young children.
As the investigation continues, the community holds its breath for answers and mourns the loss of a family that was taken far too soon. The tragic event has left a deep scar in the hearts of those who knew the victims, as they try to make sense of the heartbreak that has affected them all.
