The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has unveiled an extensive recruitment drive aimed at bolstering the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in Kenya. As part of this initiative, TSC has advertised 20,000 teacher internship posts and plans to transition 26,000 senior interns to permanent and pensionable (PnP) terms effective July 5, 2024.
The Commission detailed the distribution of the internship positions. A substantial 18,000 of these posts are earmarked for Junior Secondary Schools (JSS), while the remaining 2,000 will be allocated to primary schools. This strategic move is designed to provide necessary support to the ongoing implementation of the CBC.
For Junior Secondary Schools:
- Applicants must be Kenyan citizens.
- They should hold at least a diploma in education with a minimum mean grade of C+ in KCSE.
- Candidates must also have a C+ in two teaching subjects and be registered with TSC.
For Primary Schools:
- Applicants must be Kenyan citizens with a P1 certificate and be registered by TSC.
- Teachers with an Upgrade Diploma in Primary Teacher Education are encouraged to apply.
During the verification process, applicants need to provide various documents, including a copy of their TSC registration certificate, national ID, NHIF card, NCPWD certificate (if applicable), and KRA PIN.
The internship program is set to last for one year, designed to equip and sustain the competencies of new entrants into the teaching profession. Unemployed registered teachers will gain practical teaching experience in designated learning institutions.
Interns in primary schools will receive a monthly stipend of KSh20,000, while those in JSS will earn KSh25,000. These stipends are subject to statutory deductions where applicable. Successful completion of the internship will be recognized with certificates from TSC.
TSC Chairman Dr. Jamleck Muturi John, while addressing the 47th Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (KESSHA) Conference in Mombasa, confirmed the upcoming recruitment of 20,000 intern teachers. The newly recruited teachers are expected to report to their respective stations by September 2024.
The TSC emphasizes that the recruitment exercise is entirely free of charge and encourages eligible candidates to apply within the stipulated timeframe.
This recruitment drive represents a significant effort by TSC to enhance the educational framework in Kenya, ensuring that the CBC is effectively implemented with a robust and well-prepared teaching workforce.
