The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has officially opened its online application portal for primary school teachers interested in being deployed to junior secondary schools (JSS). This call is aimed at bridging the current teacher deficit in JSS institutions as part of the ongoing education reforms under the competency-based curriculum (CBC).
Eligible teachers, particularly those serving under permanent and pensionable terms in public primary schools, are encouraged to apply. The requirements include a Mean Grade of C+ in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and a minimum C+ in each of the two subject clusters that align with the JSS curriculum.
The TSC has made it clear that only qualified candidates, who are employed by the commission, are eligible to apply. Interested teachers can submit their applications through the TSC online portal at https://tsconline.tsc.go.ke/tsc-teacher/login, where they will be required to log in with their TSC number and password. Once logged in, teachers should navigate to the “Deployment to JSS” section, fill in their personal details, upload the necessary documents, and submit the application before the indicated deadline.
The deployment process, which targets 6,000 vacancies, comes as part of efforts to address the teacher shortage in JSS. According to TSC CEO Nancy Macharia, the commission currently has 76,928 teachers in JSS, representing only 51.5% of the required workforce. This shortage is particularly critical in light of the recent transition to Grade 9 under the CBC.
To support the recruitment of additional teachers, the government has allocated Sh4.8 billion for the deployment of 20,000 JSS teachers on internship terms. The new recruits will undergo specialized training to prepare for their roles in the evolving education system.
The TSC’s proactive approach is part of a broader strategy to ensure a smooth learning experience for CBC learners and meet the growing demand for teachers in the junior secondary sector.
