The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has officially refuted circulating reports that suggested it would stop enforcing Sacco deductions from teachers’ salaries. In a statement released this morning, the Commission clarified that the claims, which were being widely shared on social media, were completely false.
The post that raised concern claimed that TSC had planned to change the way teachers contribute to Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations (Saccos), suggesting that automatic deductions from salaries would be stopped. It further alleged that teachers would now be responsible for making Sacco payments independently using mobile money or online banking methods. This was presented as a “transformative change” in how teachers contribute to Saccos in Kenya, replacing the current system of automatic deductions for Sacco contributions and loan repayments.
However, TSC quickly flagged the post as fake, urging teachers and the general public to ignore it. The Commission reassured the public that the current system of Sacco deductions would remain intact. Presently, Sacco contributions and loan repayments for teachers are automatically deducted from their salaries and remitted to the respective Saccos, a system that has been in place for many years.
Mwalimu National Sacco, one of the largest and most popular Saccos among teachers, is particularly well known for managing these automatic deductions. Teachers contribute monthly to their Sacco accounts, with repayments for loans also deducted directly from their salaries.
The TSC’s quick response aims to prevent confusion and ensure that teachers are not misled by fake information. Teachers have been advised to remain vigilant and verify any suspicious or unconfirmed news circulating on social media. As it stands, there are no plans to alter the way Sacco deductions are handled, and teachers can continue to rely on the established system for their Sacco contributions and loan repayments.
In light of this clarification, the Commission encourages all teachers to stay informed through official channels and ignore misleading posts.
