The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has initiated a reshuffle of its field directors to mark the beginning of the new year. The changes involve new appointments and transfers, signaling strategic moves within the commission.
In Nyamira County, Erick Magak has been appointed as the new County Director, succeeding Catherine Mwenda. Mwenda has been deployed to Nyeri County to serve in the same capacity, replacing George Thuo, who has opted to exit the commission. Thuo, who had served as the Nyeri County Director for less than a year, declined the TSC’s offer to renew his contract, citing personal reasons.
Several directors speaking anonymously to Education News described Thuo’s decision as bold and unprecedented. They praised his courage in resisting what they termed as “unnecessary intimidation” from senior officials at the TSC headquarters. The alleged mistreatment of field staff by some senior officers was not elaborated on, but Thuo’s departure has sparked discussions about workplace dynamics within the commission.
George Ekeno Kapus, formerly Deputy Director in Kisii County, has been transferred to Vihiga County in the same role, replacing Magak. The position left vacant by Kapus in Kisii County has not yet been filled.
These changes are part of a broader restructuring within the TSC, as a wave of retirements is expected among field directors who have reached the mandatory retirement age of 60. Directors in Kisii, Kilifi, Siaya, and Isiolo counties are anticipated to retire soon, alongside regional directors in Western, Rift Valley, and Nairobi regions.
Additionally, the Nyanza Regional Director position may also become vacant, contingent on resolving an ongoing issue concerning Jane Njage’s appointment as a Commissioner at the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC). Njage was nominated by the TSC to represent teachers’ interests at the SRC but is yet to assume the position due to internal technicalities.
These movements underscore the TSC’s efforts to realign its workforce and ensure effective leadership across counties and regions. However, the transitions also highlight challenges such as workplace tensions and delays in filling strategic positions.
As the year progresses, further announcements are expected, particularly regarding the replacement of retiring officials. These changes are likely to shape the future operations of the TSC and its engagement with teachers across the country.
