The Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) has announced plans to promote an additional 28,288 teachers this year, marking another significant milestone in its efforts to recognize and reward the hard work of educators. This promotion drive will bring the total number of teachers promoted in the last two years to a remarkable 59,792.
TSC Chairperson Jamleck Muturi revealed the promotion plans during the release of the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results. He highlighted that this initiative is part of the commission’s ongoing commitment to fostering the professional growth of teachers and recognizing their contributions to the education sector.
“This is a continued effort to ensure that our teachers progress in their careers,” Muturi said. He urged eligible teachers to take advantage of the opportunity, which is expected to have a positive impact on both their professional development and personal livelihoods. He also credited the government’s increased funding for the move, which has enabled the commission to carry out these promotions in a timely manner.
The TSC’s promotion plan comes as part of a broader agenda to enhance the teaching profession through continuous capacity building. Muturi confirmed that the commission has placed a priority on training and professional development for educators. So far, 229,292 primary school teachers are undergoing retooling, while an additional 60,000 junior secondary school teachers are receiving specialized training to ensure they are adequately prepared for the demands of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
These programs are essential to meeting the diverse needs of learners and ensuring that teachers are well-equipped to implement the curriculum effectively.
In addition to teacher promotions, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) reported that a total of 965,512 candidates registered for the KCSE exams in 2024, marking a 7.19% increase, the highest since 2020. This growth reflects the continued demand for quality education and the important role of teachers in shaping the future of the country.
