Police in Endebess have intercepted a lorry carrying 32 drums of illegal ethanol, hidden beneath bags of maize and animal feed. The operation, which took place along the Suam-Kitale road, followed a tip-off about a suspicious vehicle. Acting on the intelligence, officers from Endebess Police Station swiftly set up an ambush, stopping the lorry and bringing it back to the station for inspection.
Upon searching the vehicle, authorities discovered that the ethanol drums had been cleverly concealed under 25 bags of maize and 20 bags of animal feed, highlighting the lengths to which illicit traders will go to avoid detection. The driver of the lorry, James Muriithi Kamau, 37, and his loader, Amos Mugambi, 27, were arrested and are currently in police custody. They are expected to face charges in court soon.
The seizure of the ethanol is significant, given the ongoing concern over its illegal use in the production of illicit brews. Ethanol, when used in unregulated environments, can be highly dangerous. In the past, unscrupulous traders have mixed it into local brews, leading to numerous deaths and health hazards. The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has been alerted and is expected to take action to ensure the illegal consignment is properly handled and disposed of.
This bust is part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat the growing problem of illegal alcohol production and distribution in Kenya. Ethanol, when improperly used, can cause severe harm, and its illegal trade continues to be a significant public health issue. With the recent operation, authorities are sending a clear message that they will not tolerate the exploitation of hazardous substances for profit.
As investigations continue, it is hoped that the authorities will clamp down further on this illegal trade, ensuring that such incidents do not lead to further fatalities. The quick action of the police in Endebess demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated efforts in tackling organized crime and safeguarding public health.
