Businessman-cum-politician Bundotich Zedekiah Kiprop, commonly known as Buzeki, has urged the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and its new political ally, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), to take responsibility for Kenya’s ailing economy. Buzeki, who has been a vocal critic of the current administration, made his remarks on Saturday, August 17, 2024, via his official X account.
Buzeki’s Critique on Debt and Governance
Buzeki’s comments come amid growing public concern over the country’s mounting debt and economic challenges. The former Uasin Gishu County gubernatorial aspirant pointed out that UDA, led by President William Ruto, should not attribute the nation’s economic woes solely to the debts accumulated by previous governments. Instead, he argues that both UDA and ODM have played pivotal roles in the country’s political landscape for over two decades and have significantly contributed to the current state of affairs.
“UDA should not claim that they are unfortunate to have ascended to power at a time when debts by successive governments are burdening the economy. The UDA leadership, including Tinga (Raila Odinga), who has now joined the government as an economic fixer, have been involved in politics for more than two decades and have significantly benefited and acquired wealth by virtue of political positions,” Buzeki stated.
Political Beneficiaries and Economic Accountability
Buzeki’s critique did not stop at highlighting the historical political involvement of Ruto and Raila. He went on to accuse both leaders of having personally benefited from their prolonged engagement in Kenya’s political arena. According to Buzeki, the wealth accumulated by these leaders through their political careers places an obligation on them to address the economic challenges that have worsened during their tenure in various leadership capacities.
“Therefore, they should not make excuses when they have squarely contributed to the country’s deteriorating economic situation over time and continuing,” Buzeki continued. He emphasized that both UDA and ODM must jointly take responsibility for the struggling economy and prioritize finding solutions rather than offering theoretical explanations.
Buzeki’s message to the political leaders was clear: “Just fix the mess you have created over time and stop digging the holes further, otherwise legacies will go KAPUTT.”
Ruto-Raila Bromance and Political Allegiances
Buzeki’s comments also touch on the controversial political collaboration between Ruto and Raila, often referred to as the “Ruto-Raila bromance.” Raila has faced criticism for allegedly joining the government after agreeing to President Ruto’s call for a broad-based government, a move that secured four cabinet slots for ODM members. This development has sparked debates about the nature of the relationship between the ruling UDA and the opposition ODM.
However, both Ruto and Raila have publicly denied the existence of any formal coalition agreement between their parties. During a visit to Nyamira and Kisii counties on Monday, August 12, 2024, President Ruto addressed the speculation, stating that the cooperation between UDA and ODM is not driven by selfish or political party interests but by the need to address the challenges facing Kenyans.
“The two political formations have agreed to join forces to help confront the challenges facing Kenyans,” Ruto said, emphasizing that the collaboration is focused on the well-being of the people rather than on personal or partisan gains.
The Road Ahead
Buzeki’s call for accountability reflects the frustrations of many Kenyans who are grappling with the effects of a struggling economy. As UDA and ODM navigate this new political landscape, the pressure to deliver tangible solutions is mounting. The success or failure of this partnership may very well define the political legacies of both Ruto and Raila, as well as the future trajectory of Kenya’s economy.
With the economy at a critical juncture, the demand for effective leadership and concrete action has never been greater. Buzeki’s critique serves as a reminder that political leaders must be held accountable for their roles in shaping the country’s economic fortunes, and that the time for excuses has long passed.
