The political landscape in Meru County has taken a dramatic turn as the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has summoned Zipporah Kinya, the Member of the County Assembly (MCA) behind the third motion seeking to remove Governor Kawira Mwangaza from office. This move by UDA is aimed at addressing the growing political rift and ensuring party unity amid escalating tensions.
In a letter addressed to Kinya and shared with both the Meru County Assembly and newsrooms, UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala has directed the MCA to appear at the party’s headquarters on Monday, July 21, 2024, for a preliminary discussion. The letter highlights the need for Kinya’s presence to discuss the impeachment motion and align on the party’s strategy moving forward.
“To discuss this matter further and align on the way forward you are requested to report to the party headquarters on Monday, 21st July 2024, for a preliminary discussion on the issue,” the letter reads. This summons underscores the party’s intention to resolve the matter internally and avert further political fallout.
Additionally, the UDA has scheduled a second meeting with Kinya to finalize the party’s stance on the impeachment motion. The MCA is expected to provide insights and contribute to the collective strategy and decision-making processes regarding the ongoing political stalemate.
The UDA’s intervention comes amid increasing calls for Kinya to withdraw the impeachment motion. The party leadership believes that withdrawing the motion is in the best interest of party cohesion and stability. According to Malala, this move will not only demonstrate unity within the party but also allow room for strategic foresight to prevent future conflicts that could strain political relationships further.
Kinya’s impeachment motion against Governor Mwangaza is grounded on several allegations, including:
- Gross violation of the Constitution
- Gross violation of national and county laws
- Abuse of office
In her motion, Kinya cited public petitions, including Petition No. 5 of 2023, which was supported by 1,611 members of the public. The petitions highlight various instances of alleged misconduct and inefficiency by the governor. Kinya argues that the motion is necessary to address the political turmoil that has plagued Meru County since the general election, impacting the efficient delivery of services to its residents.
The MCA’s move has intensified political divisions within the county, and the UDA’s intervention aims to manage these tensions and find a resolution that upholds the party’s integrity and stability. As Kinya prepares for her meeting with the party, all eyes will be on how this situation unfolds and whether a compromise can be reached to restore political harmony in Meru County.
