A political rift is simmering in Kisii County following Senator Richard Onyonka’s refusal to attend President William Ruto’s State New Year’s Eve Dinner at the Kisii State Lodge. Senator Onyonka cited dissatisfaction with the government’s performance as the basis for his decision, sparking heated exchanges among local leaders.
Kitutu Chache North MP Japheth Nyakundi, who also serves as the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party Treasurer, did not hold back in his criticism of Onyonka. Speaking after the Senator’s public rejection of the invitation, Nyakundi accused Onyonka of political insincerity and double standards.
“It is absurd for elected leaders to speak from two parts of their mouth,” said Nyakundi. “In State House, you praise and give His Excellency accolades, but for convenience, you dance to the gallery. Hii tabia tuiwache na 2024. 2025 tuwe wangwana [Let us leave this behavior in 2024 and be honorable in 2025].”
Nyakundi’s remarks come amid heightened scrutiny of Senator Onyonka’s stance, which reflects growing discontent in Kisii County over the government’s handling of critical issues. Onyonka issued a strongly worded statement justifying his decision, accusing President Ruto’s administration of failing to address pressing national concerns such as corruption, abductions, and the violation of citizens’ rights.
“It’s unconscionable to celebrate with pomp and color while countless Kenyan families are grieving and searching for their loved ones,” said Onyonka. “This year has been one of immense pain and turmoil, especially for young Kenyans who have been victims of abductions and arbitrary arrests.”
The Senator also criticized the government for ignoring calls for justice and unity, alleging that the President has neglected his constitutional duty to protect all Kenyans. Onyonka further urged the administration to release detained youths and address systemic issues that continue to afflict the nation.
President Ruto’s visit to Kisii, seen as a strategic effort to strengthen ties with local leaders and solidify his support base, has now been overshadowed by the political discord. Onyonka’s boycott underscores the challenges Ruto faces in maintaining unity within his administration and among elected leaders in the region.
As the year concludes, Onyonka’s defiance signals a growing push for accountability and reform, even as allies like Nyakundi defend the government’s record. The unfolding political tension in Kisii County is a microcosm of broader national debates about governance and leadership in Kenya.
