Understanding Ovarian Cancer: A Silent Threat in Women’s Health

Ovarian cancer, though less common than breast cancer, stands as one of the most serious and deadly gynecological cancers. It is often referred to as a “silent killer” because its symptoms are subtle and easily overlooked, leading to late detection when the disease has already spread. This late diagnosis significantly complicates treatment and reduces the chances of survival. Understanding ovarian cancer, its risk factors, symptoms, and the critical importance of regular check-ups is essential for early detection and improving outcomes.

Ovarian cancer originates in the ovaries, the reproductive glands in women responsible for producing eggs and hormones like estrogen and progesterone. There are several types of ovarian cancer, with epithelial ovarian cancer being the most common, accounting for about 90% of cases. This type of cancer begins in the thin layer of tissue that covers the outside of the ovaries. Other, less common types include germ cell tumors, which begin in the cells that produce eggs, and stromal tumors, which develop in the hormone-producing tissues of the ovaries.

However, women who are at high risk, particularly those with a family history or genetic predisposition, may benefit from regular pelvic exams, transvaginal ultrasounds, and blood tests that measure levels of the protein CA-125, which can be elevated in women with ovarian cancer. These tests are not foolproof and are not recommended for routine screening in the general population, but they can be valuable tools in the context of a high-risk individual.

If ovarian cancer is suspected, a combination of imaging tests, such as ultrasounds or CT scans, and surgical procedures, including biopsies, are used to confirm the diagnosis. Surgery aims to remove as much of the tumor as possible, which may include removing one or both ovaries, the fallopian tubes, and sometimes the uterus and surrounding tissues. Chemotherapy is usually administered after surgery to target any remaining cancer cells and reduce the risk of recurrence.

The prognosis for ovarian cancer depends largely on the stage at which it is diagnosed. When detected early, the five-year survival rate is relatively high, with more than 90% of women surviving at least five years after diagnosis. However, because ovarian cancer is often diagnosed at a later stage, the overall five-year survival rate is significantly lower, around 47%. This stark difference underscores the importance of early detection and the need for increased awareness of ovarian cancer symptoms and risks.
