The United States is preparing to honor the life of its longest-lived president, Jimmy Carter, who passed away at the age of 100 on Sunday. In tribute to Carter, President Joe Biden has declared a national day of mourning, with his state funeral set for January 9 at the Washington National Cathedral.
Carter’s legacy as both a political leader and humanitarian has resonated globally. His presidency, from 1977 to 1981, was marked by efforts to broker peace, advocate for human rights, and address environmental issues. Perhaps his most notable accomplishment during his time in office was his role in the 1978 Camp David Accords, where he successfully negotiated peace between Egypt and Israel, a landmark achievement in Middle East diplomacy. Despite facing challenges like high inflation and the Iran hostage crisis, Carter’s post-presidential life defined his enduring impact.
Carter continued to champion humanitarian causes long after leaving the White House. In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his tireless work in promoting global peace and human rights through the Carter Center, which he founded. The non-profit organization, focused on eradicating disease and promoting democracy, became a cornerstone of his efforts. In his later years, Carter also contributed significantly to Habitat for Humanity, helping to build homes for the less fortunate.
Carter’s funeral will be a significant moment of reflection for the nation. As per tradition, there will be a public viewing at the US Capitol, allowing Americans to pay their respects. Following the state funeral in Washington, Carter will be buried in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, next to his late wife, Rosalynn, who passed away in November 2023.
Tributes from across the political spectrum have poured in. While acknowledging their philosophical differences, former President Donald Trump expressed his respect for Carter, calling him a “truly good man.” Former presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama also praised Carter’s legacy. Obama noted that Carter “taught all of us what it means to live a life of grace, dignity, justice and service.”
Carter’s humility and lifelong service to others have left an indelible mark on the world. As President Biden stated, “He embodied the very best of America,” making his passing a poignant moment for reflection on the values Carter upheld throughout his century-long life.
