Victor Osimhen’s time at Napoli has been a rollercoaster, with the club’s recent turbulent season mirroring the uncertainty surrounding the star striker’s future. Following a triumphant Serie A title win, Napoli’s 2023-24 campaign was disastrous, ending in a 10th-place finish and a staggering 41 points off the top. The instability saw the club go through three managers, compounding their struggles.
For Osimhen, the issues are not confined to the pitch but extend to ongoing speculation about his future. The 25-year-old Nigerian striker has been eager for a move away from Napoli for over a year. The club, grappling with their own challenges, appears content with the prospect of offloading one of their highest earners. However, no club has yet met the hefty release clause for a player who became Napoli’s record signing in 2020, joining from Lille for an initial £65 million.
Osimhen now finds himself in a state of limbo. Napoli, seemingly resigned to his departure, are reportedly eyeing Romelu Lukaku as his replacement. Despite the ongoing transfer saga, Osimhen is currently at Napoli’s pre-season training camp, albeit in a limited capacity. According to Naples-based journalist Vincenzo Credendino, the striker is primarily focusing on maintaining his fitness rather than actively participating in matches.
“He’s not playing friendly matches against other teams,” Credendino, a reporter for CalcioNapoli24 TV, told BBC Sport. “Sometimes he doesn’t play the matches between the Napoli players. He just tries to keep himself in good shape but he’s not risking anything because he’s very likely to leave Napoli sooner or later this summer.”
Osimhen’s departure seems inevitable. In an interview with CBS Sports in January, he revealed that he had already made up his mind about his future. Napoli chairman Aurelio de Laurentiis echoed this sentiment, stating that the forward would likely join either “Real Madrid, Paris St-Germain, or an English club.”
While Paris St-Germain (PSG) initially appeared to be the most probable destination, the French champions have not been willing to meet the reported release clause of £111 million. Chelsea has also shown interest, but the striker’s price tag and wage demands have been significant deterrents. Arsenal is the latest Premier League club to be linked with Osimhen, adding another layer of intrigue to the ongoing saga.
Credendino also noted that Saudi Arabian clubs have expressed interest in Osimhen. However, the striker has no intention of moving to Saudi Arabia, instead, he dreams of playing in the Premier League. “Since the day he arrived in Napoli, we started speaking with his friends, and since the first day his agent and relatives have always told us that his dream is to go to the Premier League,” Credendino added.
As the summer transfer window progresses, Osimhen’s situation remains a focal point of speculation. His potential departure could significantly impact Napoli, a club in need of stability and positive momentum following a tumultuous season. For Osimhen, a move to the Premier League represents the fulfillment of a long-held aspiration, offering a fresh start and new challenges.
In the meantime, both player and club await a resolution, navigating the uncertainties of the transfer market. Whether Osimhen’s Premier League dream will be realized this summer remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: his future will be a key storyline in the football world until a definitive move is made.
