Victor Wanyama, the former Kenyan international and Harambee Stars captain, has shared insights into his move from Tottenham Hotspur to CF Montreal, influenced by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry. Wanyama, who had an impactful stint at Tottenham from 2016 to 2020, experienced a challenging final season as he fell down the pecking order. Despite interest from European clubs, including a significant offer from Belgian side Club Brugge, he chose a path less conventional by moving to Major League Soccer (MLS).
The midfielder’s decision was heavily swayed by a conversation with Thierry Henry, who had taken over as CF Montreal’s head coach in late 2019. Known for his iconic career as a player, Henry sought to establish his coaching credentials in MLS following a turbulent spell at Monaco. His ambitious vision for CF Montreal and his reputation as a footballing legend were pivotal in persuading Wanyama to join the Canadian club.
Wanyama reflected on the impact of his interaction with Henry, revealing how the former striker’s aspirations resonated with him. “Thierry Henry convinced me to come to Montreal even though I had played so much in Europe,” Wanyama explained. “I knew a coach of his calibre would bring something different. He had a dream of improving the team, turning it into a playoff contender, and regularly competing in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. I bought into his idea and decided to make the move.”
In March 2020, Wanyama joined CF Montreal as a Designated Player, a significant signing that underscored the club’s ambitions. Under Henry’s leadership, Montreal achieved a playoff berth for the first time in four years, marking a step forward for the club. However, Henry’s tenure at Montreal was short-lived, as he stepped down in February 2021 due to personal reasons, including the challenges posed by COVID-19 travel restrictions.
Wanyama reflected fondly on his time under Henry, emphasizing the high standards the Frenchman brought to the team. “He knows the standards because he has been at the highest level. For him, it was natural to demand excellence, but for some players, meeting those expectations was challenging,” he said. “I saw it as an opportunity to improve and learn. I loved that aspect of his coaching.”
The midfielder’s time at CF Montreal proved significant for both player and club. Over nearly five years, Wanyama made 133 appearances and scored six goals across all competitions. His leadership and experience were instrumental in stabilizing and improving the team. Despite the challenges of adapting to a new league and environment, Wanyama embraced the opportunity to contribute to a growing football culture in North America.
After his contract with Montreal expired in November 2024, Wanyama bid an emotional farewell to the club and its supporters. He expressed gratitude for their unwavering support and the role they played in his journey. Reflecting on his tenure, he highlighted the growth he experienced as a player and a person during his time in MLS.
Wanyama’s move to CF Montreal and his experience under Henry’s guidance illustrate how football careers can take unexpected yet rewarding paths. The decision to leave Europe for MLS, driven by a shared vision with a legendary coach, allowed Wanyama to make a meaningful impact in a burgeoning league while continuing to evolve as a player. His story underscores the influence of vision and leadership in shaping career decisions and fostering success, even in unfamiliar territories.
