Federal authorities arrested a Virginia man following the discovery of a short-barreled rifle and 150 pipe bombs, marking the largest seizure of such devices in recent history. The investigation began in early 2023 after a tip about a 36-year-old man, identified as Brad Spafford, who was reportedly stockpiling weapons and ammunition. Spafford, who lost three fingers in 2021 due to a homemade bomb explosion, was found to be in possession of an illegal short-barreled rifle.
An informant revealed that Spafford used images of President Joe Biden for target practice and expressed support for political violence. A search of his farm uncovered the pipe bombs in various locations, including his bedroom and a detached garage. Some were labeled “lethal,” and bomb-making materials, such as homemade fuses and PVC pipe, were also discovered. Additionally, a jar containing HMTD, an unstable explosive substance, was found in the freezer alongside food items. This jar, marked with warnings, was accessible to children, raising significant safety concerns.
Spafford reportedly expressed interest in fortifying his property with weaponry, including plans to mount a 50-caliber firearm capable of 360-degree rotation to defend against perceived intruders. He admitted to possessing the short-barreled rifle, explaining that he did not register it due to his opposition to firearm registration laws.
The FBI obtained a search warrant for Spafford’s property after learning about the explosives. Bomb technicians determined some devices were too unstable to transport and detonated them on-site. Other devices were taken to a lab for testing, with at least one identified as capable of causing severe harm. Investigators also found handwritten bomb-making instructions in notebooks.
Authorities argued that Spafford’s actions and materials demonstrated a clear threat. Despite losing fingers in a prior explosion, he continued to manufacture and store dangerous explosive materials, including highly unstable substances in common household areas. His stockpile included riot gear and a vest loaded with pipe bombs, and his statements indicated an inclination toward violence and disregard for human life.
Spafford faces charges for possession of a firearm in violation of the National Firearms Act. Prosecutors argued for his continued detention, citing the risk posed by his expertise, resources, and apparent willingness to engage in violence. They highlighted his history of manufacturing explosive devices, his possession of illegal weapons, and his expressions of support for political assassinations.
Spafford’s defense argued for his release, stating he had no intention of committing crimes. However, a judge found probable cause for his arrest, and he remains in custody awaiting trial.
