Vivo Energy Kenya has dismissed allegations of supplying poor-quality fuel in Nairobi, reiterating its commitment to strict quality standards. The company, the exclusive distributor and marketer of Shell products in Kenya, responded to a viral video on social media claiming that random tests had exposed substandard petrol at various stations.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Vivo Energy Kenya reassured customers that all its fuel imports adhere to rigorous quality control measures before being distributed across the country.
“Our fuel imports into Kenya adhere to strict quality standards, with two standard Research Octane Number (RON) categories: Unleaded (RON 93) and Shell V-Power (RON 95),” the company stated.
Stringent Testing and Investigation
Vivo Energy clarified that every fuel shipment undergoes certification at the source and further rigorous testing upon arrival in Kenya. The company emphasized that it ensures all fuels meet the required standards before they are distributed through its nationwide Shell service station network.
The company also announced that it had launched a comprehensive investigation, including independent laboratory testing, to verify the claims circulating online.
“We take these claims seriously and have initiated a comprehensive investigation, including independent laboratory testing. We will provide further updates once our review is complete,” the statement read.
The viral video, which has sparked mixed reactions among Kenyans, purportedly showed individuals testing fuel quality in comparison with other brands. However, Vivo Energy has maintained that such tests may not reflect scientifically accurate results.

Vivo Energy Kenya, established in November 2012, serves diverse market segments, including retail and commercial customers. It offers a full range of automotive fuels, lubricants, aviation fuels, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and black fuels.
The company operates oil storage terminals in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Nanyuki and provides aviation services at major airports, including Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Wilson Airport, Mombasa International Airport, and Malindi Airport. It also runs a lubricating oil blending plant in Mombasa.
