Homa Bay County has been hit by devastating floods, leaving over 200 families in Kibiri Ward, Karachuonyo Constituency, displaced. The heavy downpours, which led to water overflowing from Homa Hills, have caused massive destruction in Kojwang Sublocation, Katonde, washing away homes, farms, and livestock.
Local authorities report that at least 96 families have lost almost everything, with their homes and livelihoods completely destroyed. Over 100 hectares of farmland have been submerged, causing significant losses to local farmers who depend on agriculture for their survival. The catastrophe has forced around 70 households to seek refuge at Kandiege Primary School, where they have been camping for the past three days.
The affected families are now appealing to the government and humanitarian agencies to intervene and provide emergency aid, including food, shelter, and medical assistance. Many of the displaced persons are facing harsh conditions, with limited access to basic necessities such as clean water and sanitation.
“We have lost everything—our homes, farms, and animals. We are now living in a school without food and proper bedding. We are calling on the government and well-wishers to come to our aid,” lamented one of the victims at Kandiege Primary School.
Local leaders and disaster response teams are currently assessing the extent of the damage to determine the immediate and long-term assistance needed. County officials have pledged to coordinate relief efforts with humanitarian organizations to ensure that the displaced families receive urgent support.
Homa Bay County Disaster Management Officer, John Ochieng, stated that teams are working round the clock to assist those affected. “We are assessing the situation to establish the full scale of damage and mobilize emergency aid. We urge affected families to remain patient as we coordinate relief efforts,” he said.
As heavy rains persist in various parts of the country, residents in flood-prone areas are being advised to take precautionary measures and move to higher ground to avoid further loss of life and property. Authorities are also urging the national government to implement long-term flood mitigation strategies, including proper drainage systems and reforestation initiatives, to prevent future disasters in Homa Bay and other vulnerable regions.
