The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a weather advisory warning that parts of Nairobi and several other regions across the country are likely to experience heavy rainfall within the next 24 hours. The department noted that the rains may be accompanied by isolated storms, particularly during the afternoon, evening, and morning hours.
According to the advisory released on Friday, some areas within the Nairobi Metropolis are expected to receive heavy (>20mm) to very heavy (>50mm) rainfall. Residents have been urged to take necessary precautions, as the downpour may disrupt transport and increase the risk of flash floods in low-lying and poorly drained areas.
The forecast also extends beyond Nairobi. The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of the Rift Valley including counties such as Kisumu, Siaya, Homabay, Migori, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, and Nakuru will experience morning rains followed by showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and at night.
Similar conditions are expected in the North-western counties of Turkana and Samburu, as well as North-eastern Kenya, which includes Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo. These regions should also brace for intense weather activity over the weekend.
In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, which includes Nairobi, Kiambu, Nyeri, Murang’a, and Meru, residents will experience cloudy mornings with light rains, followed by afternoon thunderstorms and night showers. The South-eastern lowlands, covering Kitui, Machakos, Kajiado, and Makueni, as well as Taita Taveta and inland Tana River, are expected to experience a similar pattern.
The Coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale will receive showers throughout the day, continuing into the night.
The weatherman noted that the rainy conditions are expected to persist in several parts of the country over the next seven days. Residents are advised to remain vigilant, stay informed through official weather updates, and prepare for possible disruptions.
Authorities are urging the public to avoid crossing flooded roads, ensure proper drainage around homes, and be on high alert during this period of intensified rainfall.
