Several residents of Kithino village in Chiakariga Ward, Kitui County, have been left homeless after heavy rains wreaked havoc on Wednesday night. The downpour, which continued through the night, caused significant destruction, bringing down trees and destroying homes.
By Thursday morning, many families woke up to find their houses either severely damaged or completely flattened by falling trees. The affected villagers described the situation as devastating, with some losing nearly all their belongings. Fortunately, no injuries were reported despite the extensive damage.
Speaking to local reporters, residents expressed their distress and called on the Kitui County leadership to provide immediate assistance. Many are now left without shelter and are in urgent need of food, clothing, and alternative housing.
“We are stranded and don’t know what to do next. Some of us have nowhere to go,” said one resident.
Community members have also appealed for intervention from humanitarian organizations and the national government to help them rebuild their homes and recover from the destruction.
This incident highlights the increasing vulnerability of rural communities to extreme weather events. Kitui County has experienced unpredictable weather patterns in recent years, with heavy rains often leading to displacement and damage to property.
Local authorities are yet to issue an official response, but residents remain hopeful that urgent relief efforts will be initiated to assist those affected.
