The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has warned that heavy rainfall will persist across various parts of the country until Sunday, February 2nd. The affected regions include the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and the South-eastern lowlands.
In its latest five-day forecast, KMD indicated that rainfall is expected to continue over the Highlands both east and west of the Rift Valley, as well as the Lake Victoria Basin and South-eastern lowlands. The Met department noted that some areas in the Southwestern and South Rift Valley will likely experience rainfall throughout the forecast period.
However, regions such as the Coast, North-eastern, and North-western parts of Kenya are expected to remain mostly sunny and dry, though sporadic rainfall may occur in some areas.
The continued heavy rains have exacerbated flooding issues in Nairobi, with many areas in the capital city grappling with flash floods. The floods have been largely attributed to the poor drainage system, which struggles to cope with high volumes of water. Commuters and motorists have faced challenges navigating flooded roads, leading to traffic congestion and delays.
Residents have also reported cases of water entering homes and businesses, causing property damage and disruptions. Authorities have urged Nairobians to exercise caution and avoid flood-prone areas where possible.
In Western Kenya and the Rift Valley, heavy rains have disrupted transportation, with some roads becoming impassable due to mudslides and waterlogging. Farmers in these regions, while welcoming the rain for their crops, have expressed concerns about potential damage to farmlands due to excessive moisture.
Meanwhile, residents in the South-eastern lowlands have been advised to remain vigilant, especially in areas prone to flash floods. Authorities have urged those living near rivers and steep slopes to take necessary precautions to avoid disasters related to landslides and rising water levels.
KMD has urged Kenyans to stay updated with official weather reports and advisories. Motorists are advised to drive carefully on wet roads, and pedestrians should avoid walking through flooded streets. The department has also warned of possible power outages and infrastructure damage due to heavy rains.
With more downpours expected through the week, residents in affected areas are encouraged to take precautionary measures and seek shelter during extreme weather conditions.
