The Kenya Meteorological Department has announced that several parts of the country will experience prolonged rainfall from March 27 to March 31. According to the forecast, heavy rains will affect multiple regions, bringing showers and thunderstorms in the afternoons and nights.
The Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, South-Eastern Lowlands, the Coastal region, and parts of Northeastern and Northwestern Kenya will see significant rainfall during this period. Counties including Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot are all expected to experience showers and thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoon and at night.
Additionally, Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta, along with inland areas of Tana River County, will also witness similar weather patterns. However, these regions are likely to experience breaks of sunshine on Monday morning and afternoon.
In Turkana and Samburu counties, residents should expect afternoon showers and thunderstorms from Thursday to Sunday, with a gradual decrease in rainfall expected at the start of the new week. Meanwhile, the Central region, including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi, will also experience showers and thunderstorms in the afternoons.
Some areas in Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo counties will receive afternoon showers for the first four days of the forecast period. However, Monday is expected to bring more stable weather with sunny intervals in the afternoon and partly cloudy skies at night.
The Coastal region including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and coastal parts of Tana River County will experience intensified showers both during the day and at night over the next four days. According to Mary Githinji of the Kenya Meteorological Services, the situation is expected to improve on Monday, with sunny intervals prevailing during the day and partly cloudy skies at night.
The Meteorological Department advises residents in affected areas to stay alert and take necessary precautions, especially in regions prone to flooding and landslides. Motorists are urged to exercise caution on slippery roads and in reduced visibility conditions. The department will continue monitoring weather patterns and provide updates as necessary.
