The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a five-day weather forecast indicating that rainfall will persist across various regions in the country. According to the forecast, isolated heavy rainfall events are likely to occur in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Southeastern lowlands, the Coast, and parts of Northeastern and Northwestern Kenya.
Mary Githinji, speaking on behalf of the director of Meteorological Services, stated that some areas will experience high daytime temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, particularly at the Coast, Northeastern, and Northwestern Kenya. Conversely, parts of the Highlands East of the Rift Valley and the Central Rift Valley will record night-time temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius.
The forecast highlights that morning rains are expected in the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley, including counties such as Nandi, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Busia, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Kisii, Nyamira, Kericho, Bomet, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, and Narok. Additionally, these regions will experience afternoon and night showers, with thunderstorms anticipated over select areas.
In Northwestern Kenya, counties such as Turkana and Samburu will receive morning rains followed by afternoon and night showers, with thunderstorms expected as well. Nairobi and counties in the central region, including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka-Nithi, will also experience morning rains, with afternoon and night showers spreading intermittently.
The Northeastern counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo are forecasted to receive morning rains, followed by afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms. Similarly, in the Southeastern lowlands covering Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, Taita-Taveta, and inland parts of Tana River, rainfall is expected throughout the day.
At the Coast, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and parts of Tana River will experience consistent rainfall, with showers expected in the morning, afternoon, and night.
Recent data shows that heavy rainfall exceeding 50mm in 24 hours has been recorded in Kitui, Makueni, Isiolo, Embu, Murang’a, Migori, Uasin Gishu, Taita Taveta, and West Pokot. The highest seven-day rainfall of 155.4mm was recorded at Mayori Rainfall Station in Embu County. Meanwhile, Ivukuvuku Rainfall Station in Kitui County registered the highest daily rainfall.
The weatherman advises Kenyans to stay alert as heavy rains continue in multiple parts of the country, potentially leading to flooding and disruptions in some areas.
