The Kenya Meteorological Department (Met) has issued a forecast for the week from Tuesday, February 18, to Monday, February 24, predicting continued hot and sunny conditions across most parts of the country. However, residents of certain regions should expect occasional light rainfall.
According to the forecast, daytime temperatures in many parts of Kenya will rise above 30°C, particularly in the lowland areas, which will experience dry and hot weather. In contrast, regions such as Central Kenya, the Central and South Rift Valley, the South-Eastern Lowlands, and the Lake Victoria Basin will see slightly cooler temperatures, staying below 30°C. These areas will also witness sunny conditions with intermittent clouds.
During the nights, temperatures are expected to drop below 10°C in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, Central and South Rift Valley, and around Mount Kilimanjaro. It will be cool in these regions, especially at night, where cold conditions are expected to persist.
In addition to the warm temperatures, strong South Easterly winds, with speeds of more than 25 knots (12.9 m/s), are forecasted to affect parts of the Northeastern and Northwestern regions. This may lead to gusty conditions, particularly in areas like Turkana and Samburu counties. These winds are expected to bring cooler conditions at times, but daytime temperatures will remain hot.
Meanwhile, the Lake Victoria Basin, Central and South Rift Valley, and parts of the Highlands West of the Rift Valley are likely to see sunny intervals throughout the day. However, there will be occasional afternoon showers, particularly around the Lake Victoria Basin, where a few areas could experience light rainfall.
In the northeastern region, including the coastal parts, conditions will remain sunny during the day, with some parts experiencing clear skies at night. The Southeast Lowlands, bordering the Coast, will also remain sunny throughout the day, but light afternoon showers could occur in some areas. At night, partly cloudy skies are expected.
The Coastal region, including Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale counties, will witness sunny intervals during the day, with the possibility of light afternoon showers. Nights will be partly cloudy.
In summary, while most of Kenya will continue to experience hot, sunny weather, certain regions, especially along the coast and around Mount Kenya, will experience occasional light rainfall. It’s essential to remain hydrated and protect oneself from the heat, especially during the day.
