The Water Resources Authority (WRA) has issued a flood advisory, warning Kenyans to remain vigilant as rivers in several parts of the country approach critical water levels. The advisory, which is in effect for the next five days, urges residents to take precautionary measures to avoid potential flash floods and riverine floods.
In a statement to media houses, WRA advised the public to be cautious and evacuate to safer, higher grounds if necessary. The authority emphasized the dangers of crossing flooded rivers or open water channels, whether on foot or in vehicles.
“Be vigilant and evacuate to higher safe grounds using safe routes. Do not cross flooded rivers/laggas either on foot or in a vehicle. Be aware of open channels/manholes,” WRA stated.
The advisory comes as data indicate a rapid rise in water levels in several river basins across the country. Particularly concerning is the situation in the Tana River at Garissa, where water levels have surged past the 4-meter flood alarm threshold within the last 24 hours. According to WRA, heavy rainfall in mid-Tana areas, including Kitui, Isiolo, Meru, Tharaka Nithi, and Garissa counties, is expected to further increase water flows, heightening the flood risk.
Other potential flood-prone areas highlighted in the advisory include the low-lying regions of the Lake Victoria and Rift Valley basins, as well as urban areas prone to flash flooding. Residents in these areas have been urged to stay alert and prepare for possible evacuations.
The Kenya Meteorological Department’s latest weather forecast, dated March 24, 2025, predicts heavy rainfall over various parts of the country, including the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, North-Eastern Kenya, and Mount Kenya regions between March 25 and March 31. This could lead to rising river levels, bank overtopping, and flash floods due to increased runoff.
Despite the rising water levels, WRA noted that Kiambere Dam the last in the Seven Forks cascade remains below its full supply capacity as of March 27 at 5 a.m. However, continued rainfall may influence further water level increases.
Authorities are urging the public to remain informed, take necessary precautions, and follow official updates to ensure safety during this period of heightened flood risk.
