The potential transition of leadership within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has sparked significant discussion, particularly as party leader Raila Odinga explores the possibility of assuming a new role as the African Union Commission chairperson. Amid these speculations, Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has strongly advocated for Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to take over as ODM party leader, arguing that the rejuvenation of the party lies in the youthful energy, charisma, and dedication that Sifuna can bring to the table.
Amisi believes that the future of ODM hinges on infusing fresh blood into its leadership, a sentiment he expressed clearly in a recent statement: “The ODM party is ripe for youthful blood. The rejuvenation of Africa’s biggest democratic party lies in the freshness, energy, charisma, enthusiasm, and dedication of its youthful supporters!” He emphasized that Sifuna’s dynamic presence and connection with the youth make him an ideal candidate to lead ODM into a new era, ensuring the party remains vibrant and relevant in Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
The Saboti MP stressed that the youthful supporters of ODM are the cornerstone of its success and that the party must capitalize on this demographic by elevating leaders who resonate with them. According to Amisi, Sifuna embodies the qualities needed to drive the party forward, particularly as Raila seeks the prestigious continental post. “It is my considered view that Edwin Sifuna should serve as party leader to hold brief for Baba as he campaigns for the coveted continental post while James Orengo chairs a supreme council of elders that will form advisory to the party,” Amisi said on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Amisi’s endorsement of Sifuna comes at a pivotal moment for ODM, as it seeks to solidify its leadership structure following the appointment of former Deputy Party leaders Hassan Joho and Wycliffe Oparanya to President William Ruto’s Cabinet. With these positions now vacant, the party has expanded the deputy leader roles to three slots, currently occupied by Kisii Governor Simba Arati, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi. Sifuna, meanwhile, continues to serve as the party’s Secretary-General, a role he has held with distinction.
Sifuna recently disclosed in an interview with Spice FM that he had initially aspired to move up to the deputy party leader’s position, viewing it as a promotion from his current role. However, he was persuaded to stay on as Secretary-General, with party insiders emphasizing that the position is “at the heart of the ODM party” and integral to its operations. Sifuna noted, “I had aspired to move from my position as SG of the party (ODM) and move up to the deputy party leader’s position which in my view was a promotion but I was given this story about ‘heart’ that there are certain positions that are at the heart of the party that you cannot vacate to seek others.”
The strategic positioning of Sifuna as a potential successor to Raila has gained traction not only because of his administrative acumen but also due to his ability to connect with a broader, younger constituency. His leadership style, characterized by openness and active engagement with party members, aligns with the evolving needs of ODM as it navigates the complexities of modern Kenyan politics.
Amisi’s proposal also includes a prominent role for seasoned leaders like Siaya Governor James Orengo, suggesting that Orengo chair a supreme council of elders that would provide advisory support to the party. This arrangement aims to balance youthful leadership with experienced oversight, ensuring that ODM maintains a strong, cohesive strategy moving forward.
As ODM contemplates its next steps, the discussion around its leadership transition underscores the party’s commitment to renewal and adaptability. Edwin Sifuna’s potential ascension to party leader represents a significant opportunity for ODM to harness the energy and aspirations of its youthful base, setting the stage for a dynamic future under his stewardship. Whether or not Raila Odinga secures the African Union Commission chairpersonship, the advocacy for Sifuna reflects a broader call within ODM for a leadership that resonates with the present and future of Kenyan politics.
