Uganda, the African Union (AU) called for urgent and continued support to sustain Somalia’s peace efforts, underscoring the critical role African nations have played in the country’s fight against Al Shabaab. The meeting brought together ministers, ambassadors, and representatives from Troop Contributing Countries (TCCs), who reflected on nearly two decades of regional commitment to peace and stability in Somalia.
AU Chairperson Mahamoud Ali Youssouf emphasized the sacrifices made by the TCCs, acknowledging that thousands of African soldiers have given their lives to support Somalia’s security and institutional rebuilding. “For close to twenty years, the TCCs have stood by Somalia, making immense sacrifices,” Youssouf stated. “We honor their memory and the legacy they’ve left behind.”
The transition from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to the African Union Support Mission to Somalia (AUSSOM) is seen as a pivotal moment for the country. Unlike previous missions, AUSSOM places greater responsibility on Somali forces, focusing on strengthening national defense capabilities and fostering political unity. This shift requires an increase in Somalia’s internal capacities, both militarily and politically, to ensure the nation can maintain its security autonomously.
Despite notable progress, such as reclaiming territories from Al Shabaab and bolstering governance structures, the transition faces significant financial and logistical challenges. The AU envoy highlighted the hesitation in implementing UN Resolution 2719, noting that while the African Union Commission will mobilize resources, a coordinated effort from member states and international partners is crucial to prevent the collapse of the mission.
In addition to military efforts, the AU urged Somalia’s Federal Government to intensify outreach to federal member states, promoting inclusive governance and political cohesion. This step is seen as vital to sustaining the fragile gains made in the fight against Al Shabaab and in the rebuilding of Somali institutions.
The summit’s message was clear: Somalia’s future security hinges on unity, determination, and continued international support. As the AU leads the way in peacekeeping efforts, Somalia remains a test case for African-led solutions to peace and stability.
