China has firmly defended the global trade system and reiterated its opposition to the United States’ “reciprocal tariffs,” which it considers a violation of World Trade Organization (WTO) rules. In a recent address at a business promotion event for Tianjin, held in London, Chinese Ambassador to the UK Zheng Zeguang emphasized that China’s stance on tariffs and trade wars is clear: such conflicts benefit no one.
Zheng criticized the U.S. for imposing unilateral tariffs on its trading partners, including China and the UK, calling these measures a reckless act of protectionism and trade bullying. He argued that these actions have severely undermined the multilateral trading system and dealt a blow to the global economy. “The so-called ‘reciprocal tariffs’ are in flagrant violation of WTO rules,” Zheng stated, adding that they harm the interests of all countries involved.
The ambassador further noted recent mixed signals from Washington, including its announcement of high tariffs on certain Asian countries while simultaneously indicating a reduction of tariffs on China. Zheng suggested that this approach is likely a strategy to mitigate self-inflicted economic damage and influence global markets.
Despite these tensions, Zheng emphasized that China is not seeking a trade war but would not shy away from fighting if necessary. He reiterated that China’s doors remain open for dialogue with the U.S., but only if discussions are based on equality, mutual respect, and shared benefits. He called for the U.S. to abandon its “maximum pressure, threats, and blackmail” approach.
Zheng also urged the international community to unite against unilateralism and trade bullying, warning that appeasement would only empower such behavior. He expressed hope that the UK, with its historical support for free trade, would stand in solidarity with the majority of nations, defending multilateralism and opposing protectionist tactics. This, Zheng stressed, is a matter of principle in the evolving landscape of global trade.
