A devastating fire at a nightclub in North Macedonia has claimed the lives of at least 59 people, with authorities fearing the toll may rise further. The incident, which occurred in the city of Kocani, has left the nation in mourning, with Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski calling it a “difficult and very sad day” for the country.
The fire broke out in the early hours of the morning, rapidly engulfing the packed nightclub. Initial reports from the interior ministry had placed the death toll at 51, but officials later confirmed that 59 people had lost their lives, while nearly 100 others sustained injuries. Eighteen patients are currently in critical condition, battling severe burns and smoke inhalation.
Authorities have identified 35 of the deceased so far, but the identification process has been hindered by the lack of ID cards among many victims. Hospital staff in Kocani have struggled to match patients to their families, prompting speculation that some injured individuals may have been transferred to Skopje for urgent medical care. Families continue to search for their missing loved ones, clinging to hope amidst the tragedy.
In response to the disaster, the North Macedonian government is expected to declare seven days of national mourning. Additionally, authorities have announced urgent inspections of all nightclubs, restaurants, and venues that host large gatherings to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with officials vowing to take necessary action against any safety violations.
Reports indicate that many of the victims were young, between the ages of 14 and 24, adding to the heartbreak of the incident. Witnesses have described scenes of chaos as patrons attempted to escape the inferno, with emergency services facing immense challenges in their rescue efforts.
Prime Minister Mickoski assured the public that the government is fully mobilized to deal with the aftermath of the fire and to support affected families. “We will do everything necessary to deal with the consequences and determine the causes of this tragedy,” he stated.
As North Macedonia grieves, the nation remains united in seeking answers and ensuring that such a disaster does not happen again.
